12 Megapixel RGBW Sony Sensor Rumored For iPhone 6s

 

Apple released the current iPhone models late last year and while there’s still a long way to go before new models are due, speculation is already heating up about the 2015 iPhones. As always the company is remaining tightlipped on the matter and we can’t expect it to confirm any details about its new smartphones. Word on the street is that the iPhone 6s is going to use a 12 megapixel RGBW rear camera sensor provided by Sony.

Cameras have always been a major point of focus for the company. Instead of participating in the megapixel race, Apple has taken concrete steps to improve its camera technology and ensure that the cameras on its smartphones can hold their own against the competition.

A Chinese publication has floated a rumor that Sony will be providing the 12 megapixel RGBW camera sensor for the iPhone 6s, and that the sensor’s white sub-pixel will improve low-light performance of the camera.

Previous rumors have suggested that Apple may move to a dual-camera system for the next iPhone but not much evidence has surfaced to support that claim.

It remains to be seen though if Apple switches from the tradition RGB sensor design to RGBW, bumping up the resolution on the iPhone 6s camera to 12 megapixel in the process. Take this with a grain of salt for now.
