In the United States, Amazon is toying with the idea of deploying drones to deliver packages quickly but it may take a while before the company’s Prime Air service officially launches. On the other hand Swiss Post is going to start testing its drone delivery service later this month, the aim is to play a role in this significant development and figure out the technical possibilities of this technology with regards to the needs of Swiss Post.
For these tests Swiss Post has teamed up with Swiss WorldCargo, the air freight division of Swiss International Air Lines, and Matternet which is a logistics drone maker in California.
Swiss Post is going run tests on a Matternet drone called “ONE,” an autonomous quadcopter that’s designed to follow pre-programmed flight paths and carry packages up to 2.2 pounds for more than 10 miles on a single charge.
Even though they start running tests this month, Swiss Port and its partners believe it will take up to five years for this technology to be fully commercial so it’s going to take a bit of time before seeing drones dropping of packaging becomes the new normal.
If the initial tests are successful the trio is then going to run additional tests to gather as much data as possible which will ultimately aid in the aim of providing drone delivery to the masses.
