canon-eos-m-review--32In the past we have pointed out several times that megapixels don’t matter. At least for the most part, especially if you’re just planning on sharing photos on Facebook and Instagram. However megapixels are important if you’re planning on cropping photos or printing out large-sized photos for use on billboards.

Now it seems that Canon might have just made a very big statement as the company has officially announced a 250-megapixel sensor. Yes, you read that right, this is a camera sensor that is 250-megapixels. This is effectively at least 100-200 times more than what you would expect from a regular camera, or even a high-end one.

This will also result in a photo resolution of 19,580 x 12,600 pixels. According to Canon, they are boasting that the megapixel is so high than even the text on the side of a plane captured at a distance of 18km could be made out clearly. In terms of video, Canon claims that their 250MP sensor is 125 times that of Full HD video, and 30 times that of 4K.

Now we’re not sure what kind of use such a high-resolution sensor would have, but according to Canon, they are considering that it could be used in specialized surveillance equipment used for crime prevention, or measuring instruments where you really need to be extra precise, and possible industrial tools. Basically don’t expect this to make it into a consumer-grade camera anytime soon, or at all.
