Samsung Patents Foldable Smartphone With Spring Mechanism

samsung patent hingeThere have been a lot of rumors recently of Samsung possibly launching a smartphone with a foldable display. The most recent rumor suggested that we could be looking at a possible January 2016 launch, hinting that perhaps this alleged device will most likely be making an appearance at CES 2016.

That being said, the folks at Patently Mobile have recently discovered a patent filed by Samsung. This patent describes a smartphone with a spring hinge in the middle that allows it to be folded and unfolded. This has led to speculation that maybe this could be how Samsung plans on introducing a smartphone with a foldable display.

Now it does sound a lot like a flip phone rather than a foldable phone, but the patent goes on to state that there will be a mesh-like textile which will be where the display of the phone will be placed upon. As you can see in the image above, the textile will act as some sort of cover for the display.

Interestingly enough the patent was filed back in 2014. Granted we’re almost towards the end of 2015, but its filing isn’t too long ago meaning that this was a relatively recent idea Samsung has been exploring. Whether or not this actually translates into an actual device remains to be seen, so we guess we’ll just have to be patient and see if Samsung has any revolutionary products to announce at CES next year.
