The Witcher 2 Is Free For Xbox One

Microsoft flipped the switch on backwards compatibility for Xbox One last year, publishers can now tweak the titles they previously released for Xbox 360 to make them compatible with Xbox One as well. The company has revealed today that ever since this ability was added to the current-gen console more than 21 million hours have been logged by Xbox One gamers playing just backwards compatible titles. It’s now going to start testing a new way to launch backwards compatible games and Microsoft is kicking things off by offering The Witcher 2 for free.

From now on backwards compatible titles will be released when they become available, so instead of providing a monthly launch date, the titles will be released as soon as they become available, that obviously requires approval from engineering and the game’s publisher.

Ten new backwards compatible titles are available for Xbox One today, including The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Aegis Wing, Counter-Strike: Go, Sam & Max Save the World, Age of Booty, Soulcalibur, Space Giraffe, Skullgirls, Small Arms and Jeremy McGrath’s Offroad.

Between now and February 5th all Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners in select regions can download The Witcher 2 for free via Xbox.com. The free title is only available to Xbox owners located in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Grance and Germany.
