LG Courting Developers For Its LG G5 Module

The LG G5 made its official debut at MWC 2016 last month, and one of the highlights of the phone was its “Friends” feature. Basically these are modules that lets users swap in and out different components and accessories for the phone, like maybe you want a bigger battery, or maybe you want a camera grip, or maybe you are looking to improve your phone’s audio quality.

So far as far as “Friends” modules are concerned, there aren’t that many to choose from at the moment. However a report from ETNews in South Korea (via The Verge), it seems that LG is busy trying to court developers to help create more modules for its LG G5. In fact the company recently hosted a “G5 and Friends Developers Conference” yesterday.

Department Head (President) Cho Joon-ho of LG Electronics’ Mobile Business Department said, “We are going to establish a module ecosystem that will be started with G5 and LG Friends. We are going to create variety of programs that will support developers.” The report goes on to claim that come next month, LG will also be hosting a similar conference in San Francisco.

In addition to these conferences, LG will also be launching an online market come 18th of April. This is where users will be able to find “Friends” modules designed for the phone (and future phones). We reckon this is particularly important because while it is a great idea, the lack of support and options may very well just result in the feature ending up as a novelty.
