destiny rise of ironYesterday Bungie unveiled the next expansion for Destiny called Rise of Iron. The game will be arriving on the PS4 and Xbox One which we guess is not really a surprise, and the lack of PS3 and Xbox 360 support was also not a surprise since we imagine that Bungie would want to focus their efforts and resources on newer hardware.

However if you are curious as to the exact reasoning behind Bungie’s decision, Eric Osborne of Bungie explained why this is the case to the folks at VG247, saying that this is because the majority of their players are on the newer hardware. “The overwhelming majority of our player base is now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Around 90%.”

Osborne also adds that it’s about the overall experience. “In order to add new content at this time, and especially on the scale and scope of Rise of Iron, we would have to take away from those older consoles, you would have to lose something. We still wanna make sure that people playing on legacy consoles still have all the content that they paid for to date.”

This seems to be more or less the standard reply we get when developers reveal the reason for not supporting older consoles, which we guess is a valid reason, although gamers who don’t have the newer consoles will have no choice but to upgrade or be left out.
