Facebook Launching Cheap Wi-Fi Service In India

Facebook is working hard on its vision to connect billions of people on this planet that still don’t have reliable access to the internet. The company has created a solar plane which is going to be crucial to this entire agenda but Facebook is looking into other ways as well to expand internet connectivity. It’s launching a fast and cheap Wi-Fi service for users in India. The service will enable users to purchase data packages from local ISPs to get online through local hotspots.

Facebook’s new internet service for India is called Express Wi-Fi. It’s part of the agenda to connect as many people as possible to the internet. Facebook is trying to enter this lucrative market in a different fashion this time around after its free internet offering was shut down by the government over net neutrality concerns.

It has so far completed a pilot roll out of 125 rural public Wi-Fi hotspots across the country in partnership with a state-run internet service provider.

“We are currently in the early stages of testing Express Wi-Fi with multiple local ISP partners. As our partners prove the economic model is sustainable, we will work with them to scale the project,” said a spokesperson for Facebook.
