Disney has made several hit animated movies but The Lion King is perhaps one of its most successful movies ever. If you grew up during the ’90s you might have watched it once – or a dozen times in my case – because it was just that good. The Lion King has stood the test of time and has certainly not been forgotten, but Disney is now convinced that it needs to refresh the iconic animated movie. It has confirmed today that The Lion King remake has been put on the “fast track to production.”

The Walt Disney Studios has put the project in the able hands of director Jon Favreau. The decision to do this remake was apparently made following the smash hit that The Jungle Book remake turned out to be, also directed by Favreau, it has earned $965.8 million worldwide since its release earlier this year in April.

Disney has been reimagining its classic films for contemporary audiences, previous remakes include Cinderella, Maleficent, and most recently The Jungle Book. It already has one such project in the pipeline – Beauty and the Beast which stars Emma Watson as Belle.

The studio says that like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King remake is also going to include songs from the original animated classic. Disney has also confirmed that it’s working with Favreau on a sequel to The Jungle Book, though it clarified that no release date has been provided for either film yet.
