Wii U Discs & 3DS Cartridges Not Compatible With The Nintendo Switch

nintendo-switch-cartridgeWith Microsoft offering backwards compatibility with the Xbox One for Xbox 360 games, we’re sure some are wondering if maybe Nintendo had a similar plan for the Nintendo Switch and some of their older consoles. Interestingly enough there is some good and bad news on that front.

According to the latest report from Famitsu (as translated by Perfectly Nintendo), additional details about the Switch has been revealed. One of those details is how the Switch will not play nicely with either the Wii U or 3DS’ physical formats, such as discs and cartridges. We guess this is to be expected since the Switch will be using its own cartridge medium, so it wouldn’t make sense for Nintendo to create slots/drives for their older consoles.

However here’s where it gets interesting: apparently Nintendo did not mention anything about digital versions of Wii U or 3DS games. Note that despite Nintendo not specifically saying that digital Wii U/3DS games are incompatible, neither did they confirm it so for now while it does seem like a ray of hope, perhaps you should temper your expectations for now.

Nintendo has been oddly mum on the Switch despite taking the wraps off the console. We’re not sure why they are revealing it in stages, but either way in terms of games, features, pricing, and hardware, expect to find that out only in 2017.
