It used to be back in the day that when you talked about external storage, you would refer to external hard drives which are essentially regular spinning platter hard drives that have been encased in a portable box. These days external SSDs are starting to become more common and if you are in the market for one, G-Technology has some options for you.
The company has recently unveiled their latest G-Drive slim external SSDs which according to them, will allow for transfer speeds of up to 540MB/s. They also do not require an external power source meaning that you can bring them along with you on your travels and just plug it into your laptop and you’re good to go.
It comes in 500GB and 1TB variants and will use a standard USB 3.1 interface. There is also a USB-C to USB-C connector in case your laptop is still using the USB-A ports. It should also be noted that these drives have been preformatted for use on Mac computers, but it shouldn’t be too hard to reformat them for use on PC (or both).
Unfortunately just like SSDs for computers, the G-Drive Slims do not come cheap. The 500GB model will set you back $230, while the 1TB model will retail for $380, which is actually not too bad considering it is double the 500GB model. If you are interested and have the need for an external SSD, then hit up G-Technology’s website to place your order.
