Samsung Confirms New AI Digital Assistant For The Galaxy S8

With Samsung announcing that they would be acquiring Viv Labs, a company formed by Siri’s founders, many speculated that it could mean that Viv Labs’ AI digital assistant could find its way into Samsung’s next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8, and sure enough it seems that Samsung has more or less confirmed that.

According to a report from Reuters, it seems that on Sunday, Samsung confirmed that they will be launching a new artificial intelligence digital assistant service for the upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone. Apparently this is to help Samsung rebound from the mess that was the Note 7, as well as differentiating its devices from the rest of the pack.

While the exact capabilities of this AI remain unknown, Samsung Executive Vice President Rhee Injong said during a briefing, “Developers can attach and upload services to our agent. Even if Samsung doesn’t do anything on its own, the more services that get attached the smarter this agent will get, learn more new services and provide them to end-users with ease.”

At the moment the digital assistant scene is a bit fragmented. We have Siri and Cortana which are exclusive to iOS and Windows respectively, then there is Google Now and Google Assistant, the latter of which is exclusive to Google’s Pixel phones, not to mention Amazon’s Alexa which seems to be gaining ground, and soon it looks like Samsung will have their own version as well.
