It was recently reported that Volkswagen wants to make more electric cars and now the automotive giant has confirmed where it’s going to build most of them. Just last week the company announced its new e-Golf car at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Volkswagen has officially confirmed today that it’s going to start manufacturing electric cars in North America starting in 2021. Manufacturing electric cars in North America is part of the company’s plan to “evolve from a niche supplier into a relevant and profitable volume producer.”

Volkswagen’s brand Board of Management Chairman Dr. Herbert Diess has said that the company is going to be “considerable investments” in electric infrastructure on the continent. That’s going to happen first as manufacturing electric cars in North America is actually stage two of its plan for the next decade.

Diess also mentioned that Volkswagen is going to “step up” its activities in the United States and that it’s going to primarily focus on limousines and SUVs which it finds to be high-growth segments in the country’s automotive market.

Volkswagen has been taking concrete steps to relaunch itself as an electric car company following the diesel emissions scandal that has cost the company billions of dollars and has also hurt its credibility significantly. Volkswagen is aiming to sell three million electric cars by 2025, it wants to produce 25 percent more cars than it does right now with fewer employees. The company is going to cut up to 30,000 jobs as part of its restructuring efforts.
