Sony Has Some Snapdragon 820 Handsets Planned For 2017

xperia_xz_2In 2017 we can expect many smartphone OEMs to adopt Qualcomm’s latest chipset for their flagship phones, which means that we’re probably looking at handsets being powered by the Snapdragon 835. However that might not be the case for Sony who might actually be launching phones with this year’s technology.

According to the reports, a pair of Sony handsets has been spotted with the model numbers G3121 and G3112. These are said to be 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch handsets respectively, and they both appear to be powered by the Snapdragon 820. Don’t get us wrong, the Snapdragon 820 is a perfectly good chipset, it’s just that in 2017 and with the competition choosing to power their phones with newer technology, how does Sony plan on competing?

Apparently these handsets will be Sony’s flagships which is weird since we thought flagships should get the latest technology, but perhaps it could be a cost reason as we can only imagine the Snapdragon 820 will be cheaper to obtain than the newer Snapdragon 835. This is also one of the rumored reasons why the OnePlus 3T costs more, because it uses the newer and more expensive Snapdragon 821.

In any case the display sizes and the chipsets are all we know about these alleged handsets for now, so take it with a grain of salt but maybe we’ll get more information come CES or MWC 2017.
