Yahoo Says Another Billion User Accounts Have Been Hacked

marissa-mayer-yahooYahoo is definitely not in a good place right now. Back in September, it was revealed that Yahoo had been hacked in which about 500 million user accounts had been affected. However it seems that wasn’t the end of it because in a recent press release (via Business Insider), the company revealed that another 1 billion accounts have also been compromised.

This is said to be a separate hack from the one back in September, which means that this is an extra billion accounts on top of the 500 million announced back then. It reads, “The company analyzed this data with the assistance of outside forensic experts and found that it appears to be Yahoo user data. Based on further analysis of this data by the forensic experts, Yahoo believes an unauthorized third party, in August 2013, stole data associated with more than one billion user accounts.”

The company has stated that they have since notified potentially affected users and have already taken steps to help secure their accounts. “Yahoo is notifying potentially affected users and has taken steps to secure their accounts, including requiring users to change their passwords. Yahoo has also invalidated unencrypted security questions and answers so that they cannot be used to access an account.”

Last we heard, Verizon wasn’t too happy to learn about the previous hack and had asked for a $1 billion discount on the acquisition, so we’re not sure how the company feels now after learning about this, and if the deal might be in jeopardy.
