Many assumed that with the launch of the Switch, Nintendo would start moving away from the 3DS handheld console. Nintendo has since reassured gamers that this isn’t the case, and during the company’s latest financials, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima announced that they would be renewing their commitment to the handheld console.Kimishima was quoted as saying, “Efforts to appeal to children and female consumers have paid off in the fiscal year ended March 2017. Furthermore, with the upsurge in popularity of Pokémon GO, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon accelerated sales for both hardware and software and brought even more momentum to the business.”
He also reiterated that he does not think that the Switch and 3DS will compete against each other. “As we conveyed at the Corporate Management Policy Briefing in February, Nintendo 3DS has characteristics as a handheld system that differ from those of Nintendo Switch. We do not think that they compete directly in terms of price point or playstyle. We will run businesses separately and in parallel.”
To that extent, Nintendo has since launched a new handheld in the form of the Nintendo 2DS XL. This basically lets gamers play 3DS games just without the 3D effect. The console is also somewhat affordably priced at $150 and will be released late July.
