New iPhone 8 Leak Shows Off Rear-Facing Fingerprint Sensor

In a recent set of renderings uploaded by Forbes in collaboration with Nodus that are allegedly based on the actual iPhone 8 CAD files, it would seem to suggest that one of our fears of the iPhone 8 has passed, which is that Touch ID will not be placed on the back of the phone. However a recent set of photos posted on Slashleaks (via BGR) tells a different story.

As you can see in the photo above, it shows the alleged rear casing of the iPhone 8, and at the back there is a circular cutout below the Apple logo that seems to suggest that’s where Touch ID could be relocated to. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the possibility that Touch ID could be placed on the back, but at this stage of the game, it certainly is confusing.

It is possible that what we are looking at is a prototype. After all companies like Apple tend to go through multiple prototypes, even working ones, to decide on which is the best solution. In fact if Apple were to fail to put Touch ID under the display of the iPhone 8, the previous report from Forbes suggested that it could instead be placed on the power button at the side of the phone ala Sony.

In any case clearly this should be taken with a grain of salt for now, but with all the back and forth, it’s starting to get a bit hard at telling which is the real deal.
