iPhone X VS Panasonic Lumix GH5 In 4K Video Shootout

With our smartphone cameras getting smarter and more capable with every new release, the question we’re sure many are wondering is if it has the potential to replace cameras completely. Perhaps if we’re talking about those low-end, cheap compact cameras, but what about the higher-end models, like DSLRs or mirrorless cameras?

That’s what the folks at Fstoppers have tried to find out when they conducted a comparison between the video capabilities of the iPhone X against the of the Panasonic Lumix GH5. This is actually not the first time we’re seeing comparisons against the Lumix GH5. Last month the folks at AppleInsider compared the iPhone 8 Plus against the GH5, but this time round we’re looking at the capabilities of the iPhone X’s camera.

We’d like to point out that there are differences between the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X’s cameras. Both feature a dual camera setup with the difference being in their orientation in the lens. Both feature the same 12MP sensor and lens setup, with one wide and one telephoto. However the iPhone X has a slightly faster telephoto lens with an aperture of f/2.4 versus the f/2.8 on the iPhone 8 Plus. It also has OIS on the telephoto lens, while the iPhone 8 Plus does not.

Does this affect the end result? We guess you’d have to watch the video for yourself to find out, but spoiler alert: the GH5 is still a better camera for videos. This is more or less in line with DxOMark’s review in which they gave the iPhone X a 97 overall, but an 89 when it came to video.
