Vivo Will Be First To Use Synaptics’ In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Last week Synaptics announced that they have begun mass producing its in-display fingerprint sensor, and that a “top 5” smartphone maker would be using their tech. The company did not name names, naturally, but this led to speculation that it could be Samsung given the company’s interest in the tech.

However as it turns out, Samsung might not be the company that Synaptics was hinting at. In a report from Forbes, it seems that Vivo will actually be the first company that will be taking advantage of the new sensor. This is according to the report’s author Patrick Moorhead who had a hands-on experience with a pre-production Vivo handset.

According to Moorhead, it seems that it was a pretty positive experience. “The Clear ID experience was fast and simple- I pressed the right side button to wake, a fingerprint image illuminated at the bottom of the phone, I touched it, and it let me in.” He also expects that Vivo will further improve upon it ahead of its release.

While it is still possible that Samsung could be looking to use the tech as well, note that we have seen some alleged renders of the upcoming Galaxy S9 and from what we can tell, Samsung will still be keeping the fingerprint sensor at the back, suggesting that maybe in-display sensors won’t be arriving for the handset just yet.
