The problem with Android phones is that usually after two years, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not your phone will be receiving future updates. Sometimes you get lucky and your phone is updated for three years, sometimes you don’t, so it’s really a mixed bag, but Vivo wants to reassure their customers moving forwards.

The company has announced that starting with their flagship phones launched after July 2021, these phones will be getting at least three years of Android updates. According to Yujian Shi, Senior Vice President and CTO, “We always innovate with the user in mind. With this pledge, we are making a promise to our customers that they will be able to enjoy a premium smartphone experience for an extended period and continue to benefit from the latest software features.”

Vivo says that this new policy will affect European, Australian, and Indian markets, which suggests that markets not mentioned by the company will not be on the receiving end of these changes. However, this doesn’t mean that Vivo is abandoning those markets. The company says that they will continue to push out regular Android security updates, but when it comes to major Android updates, that’s a different story.

That being said, we can only hope that more companies will follow in Vivo’s footsteps. It is still kind of the wild west out there when it comes to Android updates as it differs from manufacturer to manufacturer.
