Ford has confirmed that it’s taking its self-driving service to the streets of Miami and Miami Beach. The first part of its presence in the market will involve pilot programs throughout the year with partners such as Postmates and Domino’s.

What Ford learns from this test will be applied to the design of its purpose-built self-driving car that it’s planning to launch in 2021. Is Domino’s pilot is up and running in Miami and the company is now finalizing plans with Postmates to run one for its service next month.

Ford hasn’t said how many self-driving cars it’s going to put on the streets of Miami in this test but it does reiterate that all autonomous vehicles will have a safety driver behind the wheel at all times to take over should something go wrong.

It has also built a service center for its self-driving cars around downtown Miami. This will be the home base for Ford’s self-driving cars when they’re not out on the roads. It’s also where their sensors will be cleaned and calibrated and where the data they collect is harvested.
