[CES 2018] Ford is one of the many car manufacturers that are seriously working on self-driving car technology. The company is working with a variety of partners to test its technology in the field to find out how it can be used to power the future of mobility. The company announced at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 that it’s teaming up with Postmates to deliver orders using self-driving cars.

Postmates is an on-demand delivery app that’s already used by countless people who just want to get stuff delivered to them when they want it, where they want it. Postmates is the first on-demand delivery service to partner with Ford on a pilot of this kind.

“The way commerce is moving around in cities is dramatically changing, and emerging technology will undoubtedly have an impact on the future of on-demand delivery,” Ford said.

Ford and Postmates will try to figure out in this pilot program what both merchants and customers need when sending and receiving orders through self-driving cars. Ford has done something like this in the past as well. It started using a self-driving Ford Fusion in Ann Arbor, Michigan last year to deliver Domino’s orders.

The company says that with the knowledge that it gets from its partnership with Postmates, it will be able to better deploy its self-driving technology to help people get what they need faster while also supporting local businesses.
