Steven Spielberg Doesn’t Think Netflix Movies Should Win Oscars

Last time before digital entertainment became more mainstream, movies and TV shows used to be produced by huge Hollywood studios, but nowadays with access to more affordable equipment, software, and online platforms, anyone with a video camera can make their own series or movies.

This includes the likes of Netflix who has been producing their own original TV series and movies, but apparently acclaimed director Steven Spielberg doesn’t believe that platforms like Netflix should win any awards at the Oscars. Speaking to ITV News (via Screen Crush), the director said that Netflix movies shouldn’t be considered a “real” movie as it was primarily designed to be watch on a TV screen.

Spielberg was quoted as saying, “Television is really thriving with quality and art. But it poses a clear and present danger to film goers. But in fact, once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie. You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar. I don’t believe the films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.”

There is no doubt that his comments will cause a bit of debate and controversy, but what do you guys think? Should all movies be treated equally, or do you agree with Spielberg’s opinion and that Netflix movies should win Emmys instead of Oscars?
