We have been hearing rumors that Canon could be getting ready to launch a new mirrorless camera and for those who are fans of Canon’s cameras, you will be pleased to learn that the company has officially announced its latest mirrorless efforts in the form of the brand new Canon EOS R.

As expected based on the rumors, the EOS R is a full-frame mirrorless camera. Given that Sony has full-frame mirrorless cameras and with Nikon recently announcing the Z6 and Z7 full-frame mirrorless cameras, it isn’t surprising to see Canon follow suit. Just like with the Nikon Z-series, the Canon EOS R will feature a new RF mount which shares the same diameter as Canon’s current EF mount, but will have a shorter flange focal distance.

We’re also looking at the use of a 30.3MP CMOS sensor that is powered by the DIGIC 8 image processor. The EOS R will be capable of shooting up to 8fps, and will also be capable of 4K video capture at 30fps. There is also the inclusion of a Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus with 5,655 manually selectable AF points, an ISO range of 100-40,000, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, and the camera will also be dust and weather resistant.

As for pricing, the EOS R does not come cheap as it will be priced at $2,299 for the body-only. For those looking for a lens bundle, there will be an option to buy the camera with an RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for a total of $3,399. The Canon EOS R is expected to be made available this coming October.
