OnePlus Claims OnePlus 6T’s Screen Unlock Gets Faster Over Time

One of the features of the OnePlus 6T is the in-display fingerprint sensor. In-display sensors are a good alternative to regular fingerprint sensors for companies who want an all-display design, and who don’t want to put the sensor on the back. However as we have tested earlier this year, we found that in-display sensors are marginally slower than regular sensors.

However OnePlus argues that this will not be the case with the OnePlus 6T. In a post on their forums, the company’s new copywriter Dale F. extols the virtues of the company’s screen unlock feature and claims that over time, the more the user uses the feature, the faster it will actually be able to get.

He also quotes Yale Liu, software engineer at OnePlus, who explains how this works in detail. “Every time a user successfully unlocks the phone with their fingerprint, the sensor also records areas of the finger that weren’t registered in the initial fingerprint setup stage. This fingerprint data is then added to the data the phone already holds, making it more complete. So, every time the in-display fingerprint sensor is used, it gathers more data about the user’s fingerprint. This means that over time, the phone will unlock even faster.”

Liu also notes that the system can detect when the user’s fingerprint is different from normal, like if they have suffered a cut on their finger which interrupts the pattern, or if their finger is wet, and will add that data to the algorithm for future unlocking. That being said we have no way of testing to see if these claims are true, so we’ll just have to take these claims at face value for now.
