There are a few smartphones on the market that can handle 2x optical zoom at best. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is one such device. China-based Oppo seems to be gearing up to launch a new system in the near future which would provide a staggering 10x optical zoom on a smartphone. This may very well be the world’s first 10x optical zoom system for a mobile device.

Oppo has sent out invites to the press for an event in China on the 16th of this month. The invite mentions something like “ten times the view” which is a big indication of what may be announced on January 16th.

It was previously reported that Oppo would be showing off the 10x optical zoom solution for smartphones at the Consumer Electronics Show 2019 in Las Vegas. That obviously didn’t happen and it has chosen to conduct a separate event for it in China.

No further information is available about this system right now. The event is just a couple of days ago so we will find out soon enough. There’s no saying when this technology might actually make its way to smartphones even if a prototype is shown off at the event. It’s pertinent to mention here that Oppo did announce a 5x optical zoom prototype in 2017 but it never brought the technology to a consumer device.
