Captain Marvel Weekend Haul Crosses $455 Million

Marvel’s superhero movies tend to do very well and post strong worldwide earnings on the opening weekend. It’s a similar story for Captain Marvel, the latest superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It has raked in a worldwide box office total $455 million. It now has the second largest global opening of any superhero movie, second only to Marvel’s own Avengers: Infinity War.

Disney said today that Captain Marvel has earned an estimated $153 million in the United States and $455 million globally through its first weekend in theaters. The film has opened in most countries across the globe except Japan. The earnings are in line with what Disney had predicted, which was between $145-$155 million in the U.S.

Captain Marvel is the first Marvel superhero movie that’s headlined exclusively by a female superhero. In addition to having the second largest opening for any superhero movie, it has also posted the sixth best worldwide opening of all time. That’s in addition to clinching the biggest ever opening for the month of March.

The worldwide box office collections are impressive considering the fact that the movie has opened to mixed reviews from critics. Some have praised it while others feel that this has been an underwhelming debut for Captain Marvel.
