2020 iPhones Could Finally Adopt The iPad Pro’s 120Hz ‘ProMotion’ Display

While Apple might have been the first to the market with a mobile device with a 120Hz display, Razer is the first company to bring a 120Hz display to a smartphone. It has long been speculated that Apple could eventually bring the iPad Pro’s 120Hz display to its iPhones, and it seems that the wait could be shorter than expected.

In a report from DigiTimes, they claim that with the 2020 iPhones, Apple could be bringing the iPad Pro’s “ProMotion” display to the handset. As it stands, all iPhones are currently featuring displays with 60Hz refresh rates, so it would be nice to see the iPhones run on a 120Hz refresh rate display.

As the smartphone market is pretty mature, the gains in each smartphone generation feel less significant. As a result, even modest improvements like a bump in the refresh rate could be a welcome one. Many companies have started to introduce higher refresh rates, but at the moment, to our knowledge, only the Razer Phone 1 and 2 and the ASUS ROG Phone 2 sport 120Hz displays, while the rest are at 90Hz.

However, it should be noted that displays with higher refresh rates tend to be more battery intensive and as such, companies like Google have resorted to dynamic refresh rates that will switch it back and forth between 90Hz and 60Hz. We’re not sure if Apple’s display will maintain a 120Hz refresh rate, but we’ll have to wait and see. Until then, take it with a grain of salt for now.
