How much would you be willing to pay for an in-game item? In the past, we have seen people bid crazy amounts of money for in-game items, and we’ve also seen players spend a ton of money for cosmetics and other perks that gives their characters an advantage over others in games.

That being said, a recent report from the South China Morning Post has shed some light on just how much people are willing to spend on their characters, where it was revealed that one gamer who plays MMORPG Justice Online spent $1.4 million on his character, only to have his friend accidentally sell it off for a meager $552.

Now, $552 is still a lot of money to pay for a video game character, but it’s a drop in the pond when you think about how much was invested in the character to begin with. According to the report, the man had loaned his friend (former friend?) the character, only to have his “friend” try to sell it back to him for over $50,000.

However, in the process of trying to sell it back to him, he listed it on NetEase’s in-game marketplace for $552 where another player swooped in and purchased it. The man had initially filed a lawsuit against NetEase and his friend, but a judge mediating the case led it towards a settlement where his character was ultimately returned to him.
