Facebook Rebrands Itself As Meta

Following the rumors last week that Facebook was planning on rebranding themselves, sure enough it looks like the rumors were true. During the company’s Connect 2021 conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would be rebranded and will now be known as “Meta”.

According to the announcement, “The metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world. It’s the next evolution in a long line of social technologies, and it’s ushering in a new chapter for our company.”

So what does this mean? Essentially, nothing changes for the end users. Meta is basically the new parent company and brands/products like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram will be part of it. This means that the Facebook you know and use everyday won’t be changing or rebranding, but will simply be a brand under Meta.

This is more or less the same as what Google did a few years ago, where they created the Alphabet company to act as a parent company, while Google it became a subsidiary of the brand.
