
UQ Communications Inc. has just released details of its mobile WiMAX service, known as “UQ WiMAX”. A free trial service for beta testers will be launched on the 26th of this month, while from July 1st onwards, a fee-based service will be made available to all and sundry – at least those who are willing to fork out around $50 per month. A demonstration of this mobile WiMAX service shown downstream and upstream speeds of around 16Mbps and 3.9Mbps, respectively. There will be two USB data transmission cards available, with one more for a PCMCIA and ExpressCard/34 slots respectively. Power consumption of the cards hover between 1W to 1.5W when transmitting data. Will WiMAX catch on in Japan?
