Barnes & Noble ready to upgrade Nook Color e-book readers to Android 2.2 Froyo

Barnes & Noble has taken the proactive step to upgrade their very own Nook Color e-book readers to Android 2.2 Froyo from January 2011 onwards – which isn’t too far away actually, as we are less than a fortnight away from the new year. This move will see the Nook Color as part of the tablet market, and it could very well be Barnes & Noble’s intention of doing so. After all, the Nook Color also adopts TPK Touch Solution’s touch interface, and it will see the device encroach on Amazon Kindle territory while offering a degree of competition to PC vendors by virtue of its strong library of content. Of course, the market has been segmented even more with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Tab earlier this year, apart from the phenomenally successful Apple iPad, so it will be interesting to see whether the Nook Color is able to duke it out with the best of them. 2011 is set to be an interesting year as well, since BlackBerry manufacturer RIM will be rolling out their own PlayBook to boot in the first quarter, with Acer’s models shipping in 2011 as well.
