Sony Ericsson to drop “Ericsson” from name mid 2012, will focus on smartphones only

Sony Ericsson logoWhen Sony announced their plans to buyout Ericsson’s stake in their Sony Ericsson joint venture, it was sort of a given that it was only a matter of time before Sony dropped the Ericsson moniker from the brand and focus on pushing out Sony-branded products instead, much like how they’re gotten the ball rolling with their Sony-brand Android tablets, the Tablet S and Tablet P.

According to a Sony executive, this is expected to take effect some time in the middle of next year, at which point all phones and tablets will thus be branded with Sony instead of Sony Ericsson. The good news (?) is that Sony will not longer be selling feature phones, a product that Sony Ericsson is still pushing out today, but will instead focus their efforts on smartphones.

This is good news for those who may have enjoyed Sony’s Tablet P and Tablet S offerings, and we have to admit we’re pretty excited to see what sort of smartphones/tablets that Sony will be able to produce under their own brand.
