Honda plans to recycle its hybrid vehicles’ batteries to reclaim rare-earth metals
Hybrid vehicles have been designed to not only be fuel-efficient, but due to its fuel-efficiency, hybrid vehicles will ultimately consume less fuel and reduce carbon emissions. As environmentally-friendly as it is, Honda is looking to take things to the next level by announcing that they will begin recycling the rare-earth metals from the nickel-metal hydride batteries that are used in its hybrid vehicles. According to Honda, work on reclaiming the rare-earth metals will begin at the end of this month and apparently the process will allow the Japanese car manufacturer to claim up to 80% of the rare-earth metals used in their batteries. These used batteries will be sourced from Honda hybrid vehicles and from dealers both inside and outside of Japan. Not only is this a green move by Honda, but according to reports, it makes sense financially given the high-price of rare-earth metals. [Press release]
