Have you ever experienced the heart stopping moment that occurs every time you drop your favorite gadget, with smartphones being one of the more common “victims”? Well, this is why the third party accessories market makes quite a killing as they play on that fear in consumers, but perhaps things might change for the better in the future, as Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has filed a patent application for a system which offers protection to devices from impact damage. This particular method employed will see a smartphone’s motion sensors spring into action during a drop, where it will then deploy mini-airbags which offers cushion for the fall, hoping to prevent unwanted damage upon impact such as the dreaded cracked display.

Smartphones won’t be the only devices that benefit from this particular device airbag, as e-readers, tablets, GPS systems, and cameras would, too. The patent is described as, “Prior to impact between a surface and a device, a determination of a risk of damage to the device is made. If the risk of damage to the device exceeds a threshold, a protection system is activated to reduce or eliminate damage to the device.”

Such a patent cannot be approved and implemented soon enough, methinks. What about you?
