Apple’s product roadmap for 2013 is shrouded in a cloud of mystery, exactly the way the company likes it. However, the public is treated to a plethora of rumors every other day about what the company may or may not be doing, with regards to its upcoming products. For quite some time now it has been rumored that Apple is developing a low cost iPhone which will release later this year. According to a new report by trade publication DigiTimes, the plastic based low cost iPhone will ship in limited supply, whenever it does later this year.

It is expected that both iPhone 5S and the cheaper iPhone will be announced together. The reason why Apple will not ship this rumored smartphone in huge numbers is that it wants to test the market’s response. Shipping in modest numbers will help the company gauge how much of a demand there is for this particular product. Keeping in mind how mid-range and entry-level Android smartphones dominate the niche in emerging markets, there’s no doubt that the low cost iPhone will debut to stiff competition from a huge variety of manufacturers. As always, bear in mind that this publication doesn’t have a solid track record of its claims being right, so its best not to form an opinion about the cheaper iPhone just yet.
