The Xbox 360 has had the capability to offer pay-per-view content to be purchased and viewed on its platform as both the UFC and WWE have launched their own dedicated applications to make it easy its customers to purchase and view upcoming pay-per-views. It looks like it’s Sony’s turn to offer pay-per-view content as the company is announcing the PlayStation 3 has received a Live Events Viewer application.

The PlayStation 3’s Live Events Viewer application will allow its users to purchase and view pay-per-view content, starting with this Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam. Sony is promising new programming will be made available every week and will even make free content available in addition to the pay-per-view content. Sony’s PlayStation Blog says the Live Events Viewer app will feature concerts, races and “other entertainment events” in the future, although as of this writing, only UFC and WWE events are currently available.

Best of all, you don’t have to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber to use Sony’s Live Events Viewer app, which Microsoft’s similar offerings require its users to be an Xbox Live Gold member to use. This is something we’re seeing Sony beat Microsoft to on a regular basis as they continue to offer similar services while they not requiring their users to pay a penny more for them.
