Some of Nokia’s latest devices are known for their imaging capabilities, take the Lumia 1020 for example, its the only Windows Phone 8 device out there with a 41 megapixel camera. The company recently unveiled the Lumia 1520, a WP8 phablet with a 20 megapixel PureView camera. Nokia also released an app called Refocus recently, which lets users shift focus in an image even after it has been snapped. Today, a new update for Nokia Camera app has been announced which brings RAW support to the Lumia 1520 as well as the Lumia 1020.

Digital cameras typically save pictures in JPEG format as the pictures are automatically processed. An image in RAW format is untouched, which allows the photographer to process it manually using softwares such as Adobe Lightroom. While RAW compatibility might not appeal to the average user, it will definitely make photography enthusiasts salivate. Once the app is downloaded, users will have to manually select the RAW DNG setting in the camera settings menu. The file size of the image will be significantly larger than a JPEG file. Lumia 1520 isn’t available in the market as yet, but it will be on November 22nd. Customers who receive their devices that day will be able to download the Nokia Camera app right away. Lumia 1020 users will have to wait until early 2014 though, as support for RAW will be part and parcel of the Lumia Black update.
