windows-phone-81-cortana-07Windows Phone 8.1 has yet to be officially released. What they have released so far is the Developer Preview, which as the name suggests, is open to developers. Apparently this has not stopped regular users from downloading the preview anyway, since there are ways to go about doing that, but exactly how anticipated was Windows Phone 8.1?

Well according to the numbers, it has been estimated that there have been over 1 million Developer Previews installed since it was launched. The numbers state that about 3.1% of active Windows Phone users were running on Windows Phone 8.1, and based on the overall size of the Windows Phone user base, the conclusion is that there could be well over a million Developer Previews installed.

Of course we expect that out of these numbers, there are many who are probably actual developers who are looking into the update to help develop apps for the platform, but at the same time we’re sure there are just as many regular users who can’t wait to check out what’s new as well as to take Cortana for a spin.

In any case we reckon this is a good sign for Microsoft as it could show that many users are eager for the next version of Windows Phone. In the meantime did any of our readers manage to get their hands on the Developer Preview of Windows Phone 8.1 themselves?
