Surface Mini’s Production Has Been Called Off [Rumor]

microsoft-surface-pro-3__36Back in May, many had expected Microsoft to announce the Surface Mini tablet. Instead we were given the Surface Pro 3, which in no way is a bad thing. According to the rumors at that time, the Surface Mini was reportedly cancelled at the very last minute. It wasn’t clear at that time if Microsoft was simply halting the announcement or cancelling the entire lineup.

However according to a recent report from DigiTimes, it looks like the entire lineup might have been cancelled. Their sources have told them that Microsoft has call off their plans to mass produce the device. The report goes on to claim that everything was ready to go and that the tablet had been fully developed, but due to fierce competition, Microsoft decided to pull out at the very last minute.

Apparently the tablet had nothing particularly special about it that would make it a compelling product, at least not against the likes of the Nexus 7, iPad mini, and Amazon Kindle Fire HDX. DigiTimes’ sources claim that the tablet had a 7.5-8-inch display and would be powered by ARM processors, meaning that we could expect Windows RT instead of normal Windows 8.

This is actually pretty interesting as a little over a week ago, references made to the Surface Mini were spotted. It was actually spotted in the Surface Pro 3’s guide so we have to wonder if the plans to call off production was made after the reference was spotted, or before and that the reference was not removed due to an oversight. In any case what do you guys think? Would a Surface Mini have been a compelling product?
