When it comes to advancements in the field of medical science, there are many different areas in which one will be able to look from, but this time around, it would be the humble stethoscope that would come under scrutiny this time around. At time of publishing, most of the stethoscopes that majority of the clinicians use would have more or less maintained a similar form factor and functionality – and we are talking about decades here. While these stethoscopes are not exactly all that rigid, their do have a rather limited flexibility which might make it rather challenging to access a person’s chest during emergency situations. Stethoscope Technologies has come up with a sound pick-up device (SPUD) which is actually a chestpiece – and this chestpiece can be hooked up to just about any other pair of headphones.
Needless to say, this would then be a totally different kind of stethoscope that we have not quite seen in the market, and when one thinks about it, it would be very different – not to mention simple, so much so that one might have actually questioned oneself, how come I did not think of it in the first place?
The SPUD is meant to see action by paramedics who will then have the ability to slide the SPUD down the person’s neck and onto the chest – all without requiring to remove layers of clothing that tend to get in the way. The attached headphones themselves will feature a far more flexible cord compared to those found on traditional stethoscopes, and will also be comfortable to use. It is not quite the finished article just yet, and Stethoscope Technologies are currently hoping for investors to kick off manufacturing of the device in due time.
