hawkingIs artificial intelligence the way of the future? After all at the moment we do rely on AI to help us with simple tasks. For example Google Now, Siri, and Cortana could be considered AI. The NPCs in your video games can be considered AI. Your smart thermostat could also be considered to have a modicrum of AI if it is to understand your habits and behaviors.

However it seems that despite these conveniences, not everyone is convinced that AI is good for humanity. Renowned scientist Stephen Hawking recently gave an interview with the BBC in which he was quoted as saying that it is possible that the full development of AI could actually spell the end of the human race.

According to Hawking, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete and would be superceded.” Hawking admits that the current and more primitive versions of AI we have built are helpful and influential, but it is the untapped and more advanced realm of AI that we haven’t explored which is worrying him.

Hawking isn’t alone in his sentiments as Telsa’s CEO Elon Musk has also shared his concerns about artificial intelligence, going as far as to likening it to summoning a demon, but what do you guys think?
