Xiaomi Gets Temporary Reprieve In India To Resume Sale Of Handsets

xiaomi-mi3About a week ago we revealed that Xiaomi had been hit with a ban that prevented them from selling their phones in India. This is a pretty big deal especially when you consider India’s population and the fact that the Indian market represents the world’s third largest smartphone market.

Well it looks like Xiaomi has since managed to convince the courts to change their mind as an Indian court had recently allowed Xiaomi to resume the sales of their phone in the country, although the company is expected to deposit 100 Indian rupees for every device sold. This was confirmed by Hugo Barra via his Facebook page.

According to Barra’s Facebook post, “We are happy to announce that the Delhi High Court today issued a ruling in our favor, allowing us to resume sales in India subject to certain terms.” Unsurprisingly the terms were not shared, although Ericsson did confirm the 100 Indian rupees deposit which we mentioned above.

For those catching up with the story, Xiaomi had a recent run-in with Ericsson regarding alleged patent infringement, which Ericsson claims Xiaomi had infringed upon. Ericsson stated that they had warned Xiaomi about the infringement and that Xiaomi had ignored their warnings and proceeded anyway.

The original ruling had banned Xiaomi’s phones from being sold until early next year when the Delhi High Court was supposed to hear the case.
