rapidshareThere are plenty of file hosting websites available at the moment, although many have come and gone over the years, but it is safe to say that Swiss file hosting service RapidShare is probably one of the oldest ones around, having been around for the past 12 years. Unfortunately it seems that all good things must come to an end.

RapidShare has recently announced (via TheNextWeb) on its website that they will be shutting its doors come 31st of March 2015. This will apply to all users on the company’s website. “Kindly note that RapidShare will stop the active service on March 31st, 2015. Extensions of STANDARD PLUS and PREMIUM will be possible until February 28th, 2015. We strongly recommend all customers to secure their data. After March 31st, 2015 all accounts will no longer be accessible and will be deleted automatically.”

It is unclear as to why RapidShare has decided to shut its doors after so many years of being in service, but chances are the company just could not match the competitive prices offered by their competition. For example RapidShare charges $680 a year for 300GB worth of storage, while Dropbox charges $99 a year for 1TB of storage, and with those prices, unsurprisingly many people would choose Dropbox instead.

However RapidShare does have certain features that Dropbox does not, but does that warrant the company charging so much? We guess not. So, will any of you guys miss RapidShare once it is gone?
