The skateboard is named such because there is a board attached to wheels that the users stands and balances on top of. However the folks at Hammacher Schlemmer have decided that the board of the skateboard is unnecessary and have thus removed it, creating what they are calling the Post Modern Skateboard in the process.

So how does one stand or skate in these things? Basically this Post Modern Skateboard comes with two sets of large wheels. These wheels are hollowed out in the middle where the user can place their feet in, and through a serpentine-like movement, users will be able to push off and begin to skate. “Riders simply place their feet on the two platforms and lean side-to-side to rotate the rubber wheels around the feet, propelling riders forward in a serpentine motion similar to longboard skateboarding.”

The company also claims that due to the lack of a board, it helps to make performing tricks a lot easier. “Since the wheels are not connected, riders can easily perform 720° spins and turn on a dime, while stopping is achieved by placing toes on the ground.” Now for the more traditionalist, there will also be an extendable rod that helps connect the two wheels together. It still won’t function like an actual skateboard, but it should help with the learning process.

It’s an intriguing idea that seems to combine the independence of rollerblades but with the movements and concepts of skateboarding. Hammacher Schlemmer is selling the Post Modern Skateboard via its website for $100.
