YouTube is the largest video site in the world and soon it is quite literally going to surround you. The site has plans to add support for 360-degree videos which would allow the viewer to see the entire point-of-view around the shooter. There might not be a barrage of content initially since recording 360-degree video requires a camera that is capable of doing so but things will most certainly pick up in due time.

Once Google flips the switch YouTube will be able to support videos captured through special cameras like the Kodak Pixpro SP360 and the Ricoh Theta. These cameras capture the entire point-of-view around the shooter at once.

Now that the virtual reality craze is gathering steam the time is ripe for 360-degree video to step up. With a VR headset that plays 360-degree video users are put in the center of the shooter’s world. It’s a great immersive experience.

Once this feature is launched it will be available on the official app for Android, on youtube.com and on embedded videos. On Android smartphones and tablets users will be able to see different angles of the video by moving their device around. On the site and in embedded videos users can switch between angles by using the mouse to shift the point of view.

The company has said that it is going to bring this feature to other devices as well, particularly iOS smartphones and tablets.
