Despite the fact that Microsoft runs its own cloud storage service the company decided to partner with Dropbox, which is possibly the leader in this space, in order to allow Office users on iOS and Android to access files stored on their Dropbox accounts straight from within those apps. Microsoft today announced that it’s taking the partnership even further. Office Online has been integrated with Dropbox on the web.

What this means is that when working in Office Online you can add your Dropbox account so that you can easily open, browse and edit Office files stored in your Dropbox using Office Online.

The integration will also allow you to save the new files that you have created in Office Online directly to Dropbox so that they’re instantly available across all devices that you use for work.

This integration is available for Dropbox as well in a web browser. Office Online can be accessed directly from the file you’re viewing in Dropbox. Click on the Open button when previewing a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file to edit it right there and then with Office Online.

This makes things so much easier regardless of whether you start work from Office Online or from within Dropbox. Microsoft says that this new experience will be rolled out to all Dropbox and Office Online users starting today.
