IKEA Will Release Official Furniture Hacking Kits In The Future

ikeaIt was probably not by design, but it seems that IKEA’s furnitures are loved by many for their hackability. There are plenty of websites online in which users can find inspiration and instructions on how to hack their IKEA furniture to get more use out of it and how to use certain types of furnitures in completely different ways.

Well it looks like IKEA has finally decided to capitalize on the idea by announcing their plans that they will be releasing official “hacking kits” in the future. This was announced at IKEA’s Democratic Design Day. According to one of the designers who made the announcement, he asked, “What if you could browse a site and see hacks for all the available products?”

That’s what IKEA plans to do, which is to curate all sorts of hacks and at the same time, display labels on furniture which can be “hacked”. From there shoppers would also be able to pick out compatible hacks for their furniture, so in some way you’ll be saving yourself some time as IKEA would have basically curated all the necessary components for you.

One of the example hacks shown off at the event was how a hack managed to turn a stool into a chair with a backrest, albeit a rather flimsy one but you get the idea. At the moment the IKEA hack plan is still in the early stages of development so there’s no guarantee that it will be realized. In some ways it IKEA’s plans are a tad ironic given that just last year, the company tried to shut down a fansite that curated IKEA hacks.
