Electric cars are gradually becoming mainstream, on one hand you’ve got companies like Tesla that only make electric cars and on the other you have conventional car makers with a long history of making vehicles with internal combustion engines that are now also into the business of making EVs. Nissan is one such vehicle and its Leaf is actually one of the best selling electric cars on the market, now there’s a new one, which has been announced a day after Toyota unveiled the new Prius.

It doesn’t come with a major redesign like the new Prius but Nissan has made a few tweaks here and there to make the 2016 Leaf much better than its predecessor, then again that’s to be expected from a new model.

Nissan says that the new car has a 27 percent improvement in its battery capacity which has been increased from 24 kWh to 30 kWh, the company claims that this provides the 2016 Leaf with an EPA-estimated range of 107 miles on a single charge, presumably that’s enough to award this car the “best-in-class” title.

There’s one caveat though, the bigger battery will only be included in the SV and SL models of the 2016 Leaf, customers who purchase the base model Leaf S will have to make do with the 84 mile range of the previous model.

2016 Nissan Leaf starts at $21,510 and goes up to $29,290 for the Leaf SL, prices include the maximum federal tax credit for buying an electric vehicle.
