Google Expeditions Program Expanded With New Trips

Google announced a new implementation of its Cardboard VR headset at I/O 2015 called Expeditions, the program lets teachers use virtual reality to provide students with unique virtual reality field trip experiences in the classroom. The company today announced that it’s expanding the Expeditions program by launching a dedicated Android app for schools and teachers that want to take their students on VR field trips.

Aside from launching the new app, Google is also rolling out two new Expeditions, that’s what it calls VR field trips, which will allow students to explore the Great Barrier Reef and Buckingham Palace without even leaving the classroom.

The company also revealed that more than 500,000 students across the world have already taken a virtual field trip courtesy of the Expeditions program ever since it was launched last September.

Buckingham Palace was one of the most popular requests from students for a VR field trip so Google teamed up with the Royal Collection Trust to make this happen. The Palace has also produced a YouTube 360 video that anyone with a smartphone can view to get their own private tour with the Paintings Curator for the Buckingham Palace.

Google says that it’s going to add more cities and countries to Expeditions over the coming months.
